BJJ is full of violent-looking throws and grapples that might initially make it seem like a questionable choice for couples. However, part of the essence of BJJ sparring is actually to ensure the safety of your partner, by correctly and safely executing throws and takedowns, only using the force that is necessary, and feeling out when they’re ready to submit. Training in BJJ with your partner means that you’re entrusting your safety to them in a critical moment. Nothing builds bonds like that.

Capoeira is, at once, a martial art, a dance, and a cultural celebration. “Sparring” sessions are more like dance parties set to a rousing beat, where capoeiristas perform amazing feats and dodge each other’s moves in the center of the roda. It’s a fun way for couples to express themselves to each other, and an exciting workout as well!

Judo greatly de-emphasizes strikes – indeed it technically doesn’t have any outside of the atemi used in katas – and instead focuses on throws. A large part of judo involves learning breakfalls and proper throw techniques, and correctly performed, a judo throw will be very safe for the thrower and recipient. Just like BJJ, judo requires trust in each other’s skill and technique, and successfully training in judo together is a great way of building trust in everything else. It’s like doing those “trust falls” a couple dozen times a day.
